IMPROVE BROILER WELFARE
preventing health and welfare issues
or solving those problems before it's
too late for treatment.
Much research is being
done to better understand
what role lighting plays in
the well-being of birds in a broiler
house. As the research continues, it
will deliver more useful results that
could affect the way birds are raised.
Christensen highlighted research
being done with establishing separate bright and dark areas inside the
house. The study lights the areas
around the feeders brightly and
sets up darker areas away from the
feed pans. She said this plays on the
bird's natural behaviors. In nature,
the bird finds food, fills its crop and
then retreats to a safe place to process and digest the food.

the animals from exposure may see wider adoption in the industry in
the near future. Curtainsider Inc.
This light and dark area concept
creates a situation closer to the bird's
natural behavior and, additionally,
gives the birds more of a restful area
in the darker places in the house.
This scenario, which she said she

is keenly interested in, also saw increased natural behaviors - such as
dust bathing - so it's worth following in the future.
Christensen said the industry will need to change the
way it handles transporting birds from
farms to processing. When people see
the birds on the road, and they don't
understand what they are seeing, it
leads to flights of fancy. She shared an
anecdote about how one person was
convinced the birds must be living
their lives in cages because she sees
them on the road in cages every day.
If the industry cannot successfully educate people, then it will need
to make changes to protect its business. The challenge will be doing
it in a way maintaining the payload
and minimizing animal stress. From
