plant in Weld, Morgan or Logan counties
and hiring up to 1,200 workers.
The decision follows several months
of extensive in-market evaluation. The
company cited the volatile state of the
commodities market and a higher-than-anticipated cost structure in Colorado as
significant challenges for the foreseeable
future.
“In these difficult conditions with costs
escalating primarily due to grain and fuel
prices and chicken prices lagging, it does
not make economic sense to go forward
with expansion at this time,” said Foster
Farms President Don Jackson.
Sanderson Farms, Inc., delayed
construction and start-up of its new
Kinston, N.C., poultry complex. The
company announced plans in April to
invest approximately $126.5 million for
construction of
the new feed mill,
poultry processing
plant and hatchery.

delay construction
of the company’s proposed Kinston, North
Carolina, project,” said Joe F. Sanderson,
Jr., chairman and chief executive officer.
“In light of escalating prices for corn
and soybean meal, our primary feed
ingredients; it has become increasingly
difficult to predict our future input costs.
“In spite of this decision, we remain
committed to our long term growth, to
the new Kinston complex, and to the
local communities in North Carolina that
have graciously supported this project.”
Sanderson said that the company looks
forward to pursuing this expansion
opportunity at the appropriate time.
