In October 2019, Tyson Foods discontinued its ¡Yappah! Protein Crisps. It
launched the products, made from protein,
vegetable and grain-based ingredients that
might otherwise be unused in May 2018.
In September 2019, Tyson Ventures
invested in New Wave Foods, a San
Francisco-based company producing
plant-based shellfish. New Wave plans
to launch a shrimp alternative product in
early 2020.

▶ In March 2019, Jayson Penn was named

president and chief executive officer of
Pilgrim's Pride, replacing Bill Lovette, who
is retiring in 2020. Penn joined Pilgrim's
in March 2011 and has served as senior
vice president of the Commercial Business
Group, executive vice president of sales
and operations and, most recently, as president of Pilgrim's USA. Prior to Pilgrim's,
Penn served in management positions at
several leading poultry companies.
In August 2019, Pilgrim's Pride signed a
contract to acquire Tulip Limited, a leading,
integrated prepared foods supplier with
12 fresh and value-added operations in
the United Kingdom, from Danish Crown
for about $354 million. The company said
the transaction will solidify its position as
a leading European food company, creating one of the largest integrated prepared
foods businesses in the U.K.

▶ In February 2019, Sanderson Farms

started operations at its new poultry
complex in Tyler, Texas. The $225
million complex includes a feed mill,
hatchery, poultry processing plant and
wastewater treatment facility. The facility is expected to reach full production
in early 2020.
In May 2019, the company announced plans to raise pay rates for its
hourly employees starting in June 2019.
Hourly line operators who have been
employed with the company for at least
90 days will be compensated with a
rate of at least $15 an hour. The new
pay scale for Sanderson Farms truck

drivers is $20.35 to $22.90 per hour,
with hourly maintenance employee pay
ranging from $19.95 to $27.45. On average, the company's hourly employees
will earn more than teachers' assistants,
nurses' assistants, bank tellers and security guards, based on 2018 U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics.
In June 2019, Sanderson Farms
CEO Joe F. Sanderson Jr. said the company wants to build a new plant soon,
but high steel prices are deterring plant
construction. He also said the company
is looking to potentially build its next
facility in the Carolinas.
In August 2019, Sanderson prevailed in a lawsuit filed by Friends
of the Earth and the Center for Food
Safety, which alleged the poultry
company falsely promoted chicken as
100% natural. The judge in the case
ruled in favor of Sanderson Farms, stating that Friends of the Earth and the
Center for Food Safety did not have
standing to file the lawsuit, because
they failed to prove how spending money on a rebuttal advertising campaign
was a "concrete injury."
